WHY DID TRUMP WIN?
Donald Trump's rhetoric has been the subject of study and analysis by various authors, especially since his nomination as a presidential candidate in 2016. His rise to political prominence revived the academic debate on populist rhetoric, post-truth, and fake news worldwide. His oratory style is studied not only for its unique characteristics but also for its practical effectiveness, as demonstrated by his electoral victory, which made him the 45th President of the United States of America.
In the 4th century B.C., Aristotle established in his Rhetoric the fundamental elements of persuasion through oral discourse, systematizing its study into different genres and defining the criteria for credibility. His work is considered one of the foundational texts on the subject and has remained influential over the centuries. However, some of its elements have either lost relevance or, conversely, been exaggerated in modern times—particularly with the advent of what has been termed "the era of post-truth."In modern political discourse, pathos has taken a predominant role; ethos has been distorted, and logos has been almost forgotten.
This academic work revisits Aristotelian principles and complements them with an updated discussion of the issue. Finally, it analyzes the three debates held between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in 2016 within the context of his presidential campaign.
